Truth: Does it even matter?

Does truth matter?

If truth matters then we should be able to come to a concensus but it seems that as I watch politics unfold in Washington there seems to be a great lack of truth.

There has been a definition of truth which I have always identified as being dominant among all definitions (notice I am not talking about Capital "T" Truth).

truth - that which conforms to reality.

Now, I ask the question, do we conform to reality?  Are we truthful?  Do we look at the evidence and try to manipulate it to conform to us; to our ideas; to our political bent?  How arrogant we must be to think we can actually bend the evidence and make it truth.

I believe that we have gone so far as to not even need evidence anymore.  It is a shame that we have left the realm of reality and bought into a lie.  Without a shread of evidence we accept things because of who says it and not because of verifyable evidence.

A scientist says there is 'Global Warming' another scientist refutes it.  What are we to believe?  Currently 'Global Warming' and the destruction of the environment seem to be foregone conclusions and anyone who questions the 'Global Warming' model are either publically chided and lose their standing in the scientific community or threatened even to their life to be silent.

I think we need to go back to the day when we taught Logical Fallacies.  More than a few days in a debate class or in a humanities class.  Logical Fallacies should be taught as any other daily skill.  We should learn to watch these fallacies in our daily lives.

Unfortunately the art of logic is not something taught in liberal education.

I await your responses.
